Wanda Hazel Gag (1893-1946), author and illustrator of Millions of Cats, was the eldest of seven children in a talented family growing up in New Ulm, Minnesota. This community in the Minnesota River Valley, noted for its German heritage, is about 95 miles southwest of the Twin Cities.
Flavia Gag was an author, artist, writer and illustrator of eight children’s books; she also illustrated 14 books and numerous stories for juvenile magazines. Flavia loved to paint nature and specialized in watercolor paintings of landscapes, animals and flowers. She also wrote and published a number of songs for children.
The Wanda Gag House is not only a historical landmark but also a work of art in itself. As visitors explore the restored two-and-a-half-story house, they can appreciate how the Anton Gag’s architecture harmonizes with the family’s innovative and artistic sensibilities.
